“Ocean Carbon Sequestration and Climate Resilience” is a biweekly International Seminar Series endorsed by UNESCO Ocean Decade and sponsored by the Global ONCE - a UN Ocean Decade Programme led by Professor Nianzhi Jiao at Xiamen University.
The seminar series is on a mission to foster a global marine community with a shared vision for the health and well-being of the ocean and humanity.
The series aligns with Sustainable Development Goals 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water), and 17 (Partnership for the Goals).
The seminar series is chaired by Chuanlun ZHANG, Chair Professor at Southern University of Science and Technology (China), a National Distinguished Expert, and Director for International Collaborations of the Global-ONCE Programme.
Each seminar will cover one or more of the following topics:
- Biogeochemical engines driving Climate Change
- The marine carbon pool and climate impact
- The microbial pillars supporting contemporary marine ecosystems
- The Omics of marine microbiomes
- Ocean-atmosphere interactions and links to marine microbial processes
- Sea farming and carbon sequestration
- Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) corroborated by microbial functions
- Blue carbon storage and export to the ocean
- Mangrove carbon storage and ecology
- Molecular biomarkers for ocean negative carbon emissions
- Monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) for ocean negative carbon emissions
- International governance on ocean negative carbon emissions
- Economic value accounting of ocean negative carbon emissions
- International standards of ocean negative carbon emissions and trading policies
- Ocean literacy and knowledge dissemination
Each biweekly seminar will be conducted virtually via Zoom on Thursdays from 4:00-5:00 pm Beijing Time.
The seminar format will consist of a keynote presentation (30 minutes) followed by a panel discussion (20 minutes).
