On April 24, 2026, Nianzhi Jiao, Chief Scientist of the Ocean Negative Carbon Emissions (ONCE) and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Sergio Lavandero González, President of the Chilean Academy of Sciences, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Santiago, the capital of Chile, to jointly promote the establishment of the South American Hub of ONCE in Concepción.

Qingbao Niu, Chinese Ambassador to Chile, met with Academician Nianzhi Jiao and his delegation. During the meeting, Ambassador Qingbao Niu congratulated the ONCE Program and the Chilean Academy of Sciences on signing the MoU to establish the South American Hub of ONCE. He applauded the ONCE program for providing a "China Solution" for ocean sustainable development and expressed the hope that the South American Hub would play a role in promoting scientific and technological innovation, academic cooperation, and science popularization exchanges between China and Chile.
